6 Fun Winter Activities in Breckenridge

We might be a little bit biased, but we’re pretty sure there’s no better place to spend winter than Breckenridge. If you’re going to be cold, you may as well be cold in the most idyllic setting imaginable! This time of year, you can find us skiing the powdery slopes of Peak 8, taking a sleigh ride through White River National Forest, or cozying up in a coffee shop with a good book. We don’t even mind when a blizzard hits; you really can’t beat the views of Breckenridge blanketed in white, fluffy snow.

Whether you recently decided to buy a luxury home in Summit County or you’ve been a local for years, there are so many fun winter activities in Breckenridge worth penciling into your calendar. From sledding at Carter Park, to riding the free BreckConnect Gondola, to ice skating under the stars, we’ve rounded up a few activities and events we’re really looking forward to this season. Bonus: they’re all family friendly, so pack the kiddos in the car along with your gear!

6 Fun Winter Activities in Breckenridge

1. Ride the BreckConnect Gondola

Take in a bird’s eye view of Breckenridge on the BreckConnect Gondola. The 10-minute ride offers stunning view of Cucumber Gulch, where you might spot a moose if you’re lucky. Fun fact: the BreckConnect can transport 3,000 people per hour from town to the base of peak 8! Riding the gondola is completely free for Breckenridge locals and visitors, but be sure to dress warmly – the cabins aren’t heated.

2. Winter Dew Tour Ski and Snowboard Competition and Festival

The 2017 Dew Tour kicks off a week from today in Breckenridge and will serve as a U.S. ski and snowboard Olympic qualifying event. In other words, this year’s competition is going to be fierce! The ski and snowboard events are free to watch, but tickets are required for the concert at the Riverwalk Center on December 16th.

3. Go ice skating outdoors

We all know the indoor Stephen C. West Ice Arena is open all year round. But Breckenridge locals and visitors get a special treat once the temperature dips. In winter, you can go ice skating outdoors most days of the week in the afternoon or evening. Check the ice arena schedule to start planning an affordable, family-friendly skating date. Warming up with a mug of hot cocoa afterwards is optional, but highly recommended.

4. Ride the Main Street trolley

Strolling along Main Street in Breckenridge is a scene straight out of a storybook this time of year. The only thing better than walking is hitching a ride on the free Main Street trolley! The trolley stops in several places, making it easy jump off to grab dessert at Crepes A La Cart. Hitching a ride on the trolley is a great way to show out-of-town visitors the splendor of downtown Breckenridge while saving your legs for skiing and snowboarding.

5. Go sledding at Carter Park

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities in Breckenridge that never gets old. Located just a few blocks off Main Street, Carter Park is Breck’s only sledding hill, so it tends to get crowded. If you have young children, you may want to go during off-peak hours for the best chance at a stress-free ride. BYOS (bring your own sled) and consider a helmet for safety.

6. International Snow Sculpture Championships

If you can wrap your mind around the fact that 2018 is upon us (what?!) pencil the International Snow Sculpture Championships into your calendar. From January 22nd to January 29th, snow sculpture artists from around the world will create masterpieces out 12-foot-tall blocks of snow. It’s really quite the spectacle! Pro tip: Thursday, January 25th will be the best day to check it out as the artists finalize their work.
